Reactor

A reactor is a device or system designed to facilitate and control chemical or physical reactions. It provides a controlled environment where reactants can interact under specific conditions to produce desired products or outcomes. Batch Reactor: A batch reactor is a closed vessel where reactants are added, and the reaction proceeds without continuous inflow or outflow of materials. The reaction is allowed to reach completion, after which the products are collected and the reactor is emptied for the next batch. Batch reactors are commonly used for small-scale production or in processes with long reaction times.

Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR): In a CSTR, reactants are continuously fed into the reactor, and products are continuously withdrawn. The reactants are well-mixed within the reactor, typically through mechanical agitation, to ensure uniform reaction conditions. CSTRs are widely used in chemical processing and large-scale industrial operations.

Plug Flow Reactor (PFR): A PFR is a tubular reactor where reactants flow through a tube in a continuous manner. The reactants form a “plug” and move through the reactor without mixing, maintaining a defined residence time. PFRs are particularly useful for reactions with high conversions or reactions that require specific residence time profiles.

Fixed Bed Reactor: In a fixed bed reactor, solid reactants or catalysts are packed in a fixed bed within the reactor. The reactant fluid flows through the bed, allowing for reaction or catalysis to occur. Fixed bed reactors are commonly used in catalytic processes, such as petroleum refining and chemical synthesis.

Fluidized Bed Reactor: In a fluidized bed reactor, solid particles or catalysts are suspended and fluidized by a flowing fluid, usually a gas or a liquid. This creates a highly mixed and agitated environment, enabling efficient heat and mass transfer. Fluidized bed reactors are utilized in various processes, including catalytic reactions, combustion, and gasification.

Photochemical Reactor: A photochemical reactor is designed for reactions that are initiated or driven by light. It provides a controlled environment for photochemical reactions, typically through the use of specialized light sources and transparent reactor vessels.
